Successful field campaigns in Southern Finland for FERRO

The FERRO project has marked a remarkable achievement, representing a significant step forward in its mission to advance sustainable lake restoration.

A two-week collaboration between the University of Helsinki (UH) and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) enabled the use of advanced sonar technology, expertly operated by Theis Kragh from SDU.

The team work expanded its efforts to three additional nutrient-rich lakes in southern Finland: the Vähäselkä basin of Lake Vesijärvi, Karhujärvi (Siuntio), and Pitkäjärvi (Espoo). The sonar surveys provide crucial insights into lakebed characteristics, supporting the development of effective and sustainable restoration strategies.

In the following days, the project team complemented the sonar data with detailed analyses of sediment composition, redox conditions, sediment phosphorus release, greenhouse gas emissions, and water quality. This marked the final sampling campaign of 2025 and the conclusion of one of the key tasks within the FERRO project. As a result, the team is now preparing to report on opportunities for targeted sediment removal in six lakes across southern Finland, as well as the potential for scaling up these restoration approaches.

The FERRO consortium extends its sincere thanks to Theis Kragh, Franco Castillo Quimbiulco, Olga Tammeorg, and Priit Tammeorg for their dedication in achieving this important milestone. Special appreciation is also given to Jenni Kurvonen and Samuel Amoah for their valuable contributions to this successful phase of the project.
