FERRO at the 16th IASWS Symposium
FERRO attended the 16th Symposium of the International Association for Sediment Water Science (IASWS16), held from 30 June to 4 July 2025 in the scenic coastal town of Le Touquet, France. The symposium brought together international experts working on sediment-related processes across a range of environmental systems, providing an ideal platform to highlight FERRO’s latest research on sustainable lake restoration in the context of climate change.
Representing FERRO’s team were Olga Tammeorg (from the University of Helsinki) and Luis Braune (from UFZ).
Olga Tammeorg co-organised and led a dedicated session, exploring the role of sediment-derived nutrients in promoting cyanobacterial blooms under changing climatic conditions. The main subject of the session was sediment–water interactions that provided compelling evidence that internal phosphorus loading has a measurable impact even in oligo-mesotrophic lakes, particularly under high temperature and reduced precipitation.
Luis Braune showed FERRO’s contribution by presenting early results from a 2024 trial on inflow-based flocculant dosing. His talk highlighted a practical approach to reduce nutrient inputs into lakes, reinforcing the need for targeted measures alongside a better understanding of cumulative stressors.
Together with Franco Castillo Quimbiulco, Olga Tammeorg and Luis Braune shared new findings from case study sites in Finland (Enäjärvi, Pusulanjärvi and Rusutjärvi) and Germany (Dröda reservoir), underscoring the importance of integrating multiple lines of evidence for effective and sustainable lake management.
The special session was met with engagement from participants and fostered new connections for future collaboration. The FERRO team extends sincere thanks to all contributors, especially the symposium organisers - University of Lille.
